WESTERN
GAILES GOLF CLUB

Western Gailes is situated in
the north of Ayrshire, and although a links golf course,
it has many features which are semi-inland. Western
Gailes is one of the most enjoyable of the lesser-known
courses.
Scottish golf writer, Sam
McKinlay, said of it: "Western Gailes occupies a
place in the affections of Scottish golfers that cannot
be explained solely on the grounds of its undoubted
quality, its superb situation, or the creature comforts
which it furnishes.
True, there are more severe
golfing tests, there are courses with longer and more
renowned histories; but few have so many of the good
things of golf as Western Gailes".
The view from the clubhouse
gives an instant picture of the delights Gailes has in
store. The beautiful, light-colored, fine-bladed links
turf reaches out in all directions, between intruding
fingers of heather and protruding sand dunes. The hills
of Arran and the sharp outline of Ailsa Craig stand out
from the shimmering sea.
Unlike many links courses where
the sea is almost completely hidden by massive sandhills,
or where the course itself is now a long way from the
sea, at Western Gailes you are always aware of its
presence and its beauty, particularly so on a marvelous
stretch of holes from the 7th to the 13th.
Perhaps that is why, combined
with its beautiful setting and warm welcome, it has
captivated so many golfers for so long and will always
continue to do so.
