THE WESTIN TURNBERRY
RESORT

Turnberry, Scotland
This view shows the par 5, 17th green, viewing up the 18th fairway with the Clubhouse on the left and dominated by the Turnberry Hotel on top of the hill.
From
afar, one can see the hotel's white facade, its red-tile
roof, and its dozens of gables.
The Westin Turnberry
Resort, Golf Courses and Spa is a remarkable
Edwardian property that has undergone the most complete
glamorizations of any hotel in Scotland. The owners spent
millions of dollars on the infrastructure and decor
without diminishing the aura of the more opulent era of
1908 when the hotel was built.
In World
War II the corridors of the structure were transformed
into a military hospital, but today the property is once
again one of the grand hotels of Britain. The public
rooms contain Waterford crystal chandeliers, Ionic
columns, molded ceilings and well-polished oak paneling.
Each suite
and bedroom is furnished in an elegant 19th-century
style, with a marble-sheathed bath; the rooms open onto
views of the surrounding lawns, forests, and in some
cases, the Scottish coastline.
The hotel
maintains three different eating areas with differing
degrees of formality. Most elegant is the Turnberry
Restaurant, serving traditional Scottish and French
recipes.

Traditional French cuisine in the
modern manner is the style of food that prevails in the Hotel
restaurant, together with a healthy helping of classic Scottish dishes.
The Terrace Brasserie, at Turnberry's spa, specialises in a lighter
Mediterranean -inspired menu, and the Tappie Toorie Grill in the
Clubhouse offers informal all day dining. All the restaurants share a
bias towards fresh, locally grown produce with seafood and game
delivered daily, along with fresh fruit and vegetables.
The Bay at Turnberry is part of the resort's spa
facilities, and enjoys spectacular views of Turnberry
Bay. The Clubhouse Restaurant enjoys views over both the
Ailsa and Arran Courses.
