MUIRFIELD

Muirfield is the home of the oldest golf
club in the world. Founded in 1744, the Honourable
Company of Edinburgh Golfers drew up the first set of
golf rules, known as the famous "Thirteen
Rules", and these were by and large adopted by the
Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
Muirfield is a classic links course,
though hints of a parkland character are in evidence. It
changes direction continually and can play long on a
windy day. The greens are hard and fast, and the rough
can be fierce.
There have been many famous incidents in
major tournaments on and off this course, and only the
greatest golfers have won major trophies here --Walter
Hagen, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Tony Jacklin and Tom
Watson to name a few.
The course is highly regarded in the golf
world: James Braid, the famous golf course designer, gave
one of his sons the middle name of "Muirfield";
and Jack Nicklaus took the name for his American club.
