ROYAL
PORTRUSH

Unlike Royal County Down, which
has gorse and heather in abundance, Royal Portrush is a
traditional links built among huge sand dunes right on
the northernmost coast of Ireland. It is the only course
outside mainland Britain to have hosted the Open
Championship.
Royal Portrush has, arguably,
the best opening hole of any of the Irish links -- an
uphill par four to a generous green guarded on one side
by deep bunkers and with a very steep drop to the left.
After that the holes that follow are superb, the fairways
thread their way through the dunes and although the
greens are large, you have to be accurate or three
putting is all too easy.
